Madeline was a little worried about taking her mother grocery shopping at Maynard's. After all, the grocery store was decades old, very small, and not at all what her mother was probably accustomed to. But a few days before Thanksgiving, they had no choice. Madeline and Eloise found themselves bustling through the aisles, trying to get a few last-minute things. Their cart was already half full with fresh vegetables, a big bag of flour, cartons of broth and the requisite cans of cranberry sauce. As far as Brady was concerned, cranberry sauce came from a can and needed to be can shaped. He wasn't going to eat it any other way. Madeline laughed every time she thought about it.

As they walked down the aisle in the produce section, Madeline picked up a bag of peaches, looking at each of them carefully before placing them into the cart. "These will be perfect for the cobbler."

Eloise nodded. "Do we have enough cinnamon and nutmeg?"

"I think so, but you can never be too safe. Grab an extra bottle of each. We can always use them."

They moved through the store, and Madeline couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with her mother. That was something she had not felt in many years. They talked about different cooking ideas, debated the merits of the canned versus fresh cranberry sauce, and even laughed over a display in the store of novelty turkey-shaped salt and pepper shakers. Madeline wanted to get some, but Eloise said they were tacky and she should leave them out of the buggy.

Finally, they reached the meat section, and Madeline carefully selected a roast. In her stressed-out mentality, Madeline had forgotten to get a turkey days ago when she was doing her normal shopping. She was surprised any were still available, but thankfully they got lucky and grabbed one of the last ones that were there.

They finally made their way to the checkout, and as Madeline looked at their cart, which was filled to the brim with the makings of a perfect Thanksgiving dinner, she felt a sense of happiness wash over her. Before her mother had shown up, she didn't realize how much she had missed having her in her life. There was such a wall around her when it came to her mother that she didn't think about it. She didn't even allow herself to feel the feelings of loss that were so obviously there. Now, all she felt was happiness. Occasionally, her mother would say or do something that would want to send her reeling, but she came back to the conversation they had that night in the rocking chairs. Knowing her mother was at least trying was more than she could ask for and was certainly something she was thankful for this year.

"Thank you, Mom," she said softly as they waited in line. "This means a lot to me."

Eloise reached over and squeezed her hand. "It means a lot to me too, Madeline. I'm so happy we get to do this together this year.
